Artificial Heart DEVELOPMENT OF THE PHYSlOLOGlCAL CONTROL SCHEME FOR AN ELECTROHYDRAULIC TOTAL ARTIFICIAL HEART

A totally implantable artificial heart actuated by an electrohydraulic energy converter is described and the requirements for its physiological control scheme are listed. Eased on these specifications and on previous work done in our laboratory on control schemes for the Electro-Hydraulic Total Artificial Heart (EHTAH), preliminary experiments were conducted which confirmed the feasibility of the proposed control scheme for the current device configuration. DESCRIPTION OF THE EHTAH The Artificial Heart Research Laboratory (AHRL) at the University of Utah is now directing its research efforts towards the development of a totally implantable cardiac replacement device incorporating electrohydraulic actuation. For this purpose, an EHTAH configuration which serves as a base design for development and testing has been selected. This EHTAH system (see Figure 1) consists of two artificial ventricles (each with a 75 ml stroke volume) connected to a single common volume displacement chamber (VDC) with a volume of 170 ml, two energy converters (each comprised of a brushless dc motor driving an axial flow pump), and a controller.
